Royalty Free Music FAQs

What Are Royalties?

The music industry relies on royalties, which are generated by the licensing of copyrighted songs and recordings and represent an important part of musicians’ income. Once you’ve paid a royalty, you have essentially bought the right to use an asset from the owner.

What Is Royalty Free Music?

This is a term which is bandied around quite a lot, so we don’t blame you if you are feeling unsure as to its exact meaning.

Put simply, royalty-free music, also sometimes called pre-licensed music, describes a kind of music licensing which permits the buyer to pay a one-off sum for the music licence – they can then use the music for as long as they want. Once you’ve paid the original purchase price, there are no further royalty payments attached.

Why Confusion Around Royalties?

There are a few things, for example, which royalty-free music most definitely is NOT. It is not free of charge, it’s not always a stock music and it is not copyright-free, either. Equally, royalty-free music licensing doesn’t cover ‘public performance’ royalties. Composers receive this money when their music gets a public performance, for example on TV. (However, it’s generally the network broadcasting the music which pays this.)

Does Royalty Free Mean "Of a Less Quality"?

Absolutely not! Royalty-free music can be licensed at any price, has nothing to do with the quality of the sounds, and can encompass any genre from country to heavy metal to classical. Having said that, more often than not, the licensing model is intended to provide audio which is affordable. But low cost certainly doesn’t have to mean low quality.
