Royalty free music questions

Everything you need to know about licensing, ownership and using our tracks.

What are royalties?
The music industry relies on royalties, generated by the licensing of copyrighted songs and recordings, which form an important part of musicians' income. Once you have paid a royalty, you have essentially bought the right to use an asset from the owner.
What is royalty free music?
Royalty free music, sometimes called pre-licensed music, describes a kind of music licensing that lets the buyer pay a one-off sum for the music licence and then use the music for as long as they want. Once you have paid the original purchase price, there are no further royalty payments attached.
Why is there confusion around royalties?
There are a few things royalty free music most definitely is not. It is not free of charge, it is not always stock music, and it is not copyright free. Royalty free licensing also does not cover public performance royalties. Composers receive that money when their music is performed publicly, for example on TV, and it is generally the broadcasting network that pays it.
Does royalty free mean lower quality?
Absolutely not. Royalty free music can be licensed at any price, has nothing to do with the quality of the sounds, and can span any genre from country to heavy metal to classical. The licensing model is usually intended to keep audio affordable, but low cost certainly does not mean low quality.
Why buy royalty free music from us?
We specialise in royalty free music plus custom voice overs to help a wide range of clients with their audio needs. We own all the music we sell, with robust agreements in place with our talent, and we never deal with third parties, which reduces the chance of copyright niggles. We also offer some of the most generous licensing terms available.
